Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about working with Mr. Home.

Basement Waterproofing

How do I know if my basement needs waterproofing?

Common signs include water stains on walls or floors, a musty smell, visible mold or mildew, efflorescence (white chalky deposits), or standing water after heavy rain. If you notice any of these, it is worth having Mr. Home take a look — we offer free estimates.

What is the difference between interior and exterior waterproofing?

Interior waterproofing manages water that has already entered, using systems like French drains and sump pumps to redirect it out. Exterior waterproofing addresses the source by sealing the outside of the foundation. Mr. Home assesses your specific situation and recommends the right approach.

How long does basement waterproofing take?

Most waterproofing jobs are completed in one to two days depending on the size of the basement and scope of work. We will give you a clear timeline before any work begins.

Will waterproofing fix my foundation cracks?

Yes. Foundation wall crack repair is part of our waterproofing service. We seal cracks to stop water infiltration and assess whether any structural reinforcement is needed.

Does Mr. Home guarantee waterproofing work?

Every waterproofing job is backed by our lifetime written guarantee. If the problem comes back, so do we.

Mold & Mildew

How do I know if I have mold in my basement?

Signs include a persistent musty odor, visible dark spots on walls or ceiling, allergy symptoms that worsen indoors, or recent water damage. Mold often grows in hidden areas, so even without visible signs it may be present after flooding or prolonged moisture.

Is black mold dangerous?

Black mold can cause serious respiratory issues, allergic reactions, and other health problems, especially in children and the elderly. It should be addressed by a professional, not disturbed with DIY methods that can spread spores.

What does the mold removal process look like?

We assess the extent of the mold, contain the affected area, remove contaminated material, treat the surface with antimicrobial solution, and address the moisture source that caused it. You will receive a full walkthrough before work begins.

Will the mold come back after treatment?

Not if the root moisture problem is fixed. We do not just treat the surface — we identify and address what is causing the moisture, whether that is a foundation crack, poor drainage, or humidity buildup.

Do you offer mold inspections before remediation?

Yes. We inspect the area first and give you an honest assessment of what we find before any work is committed to.

Masonry & Concrete

What types of masonry work does Mr. Home handle?

We handle chimney repair and cleaning, tuckpointing and brick pointing, retaining walls, concrete steps and walkways, hatchway and bulkhead replacement, basement window replacement, and general concrete and masonry restoration.

How do I know if my chimney needs repair?

Look for crumbling mortar between bricks, missing or damaged chimney caps, white staining on the exterior, or water in the firebox. Chimney damage that goes unrepaired can lead to water infiltration and structural problems.

Can you repair cracked or sunken concrete steps?

Yes. We repair and rebuild concrete and masonry steps. Depending on the condition, we may be able to repair in place or recommend a full rebuild for safety and longevity.

What is tuckpointing and do I need it?

Tuckpointing is the process of removing deteriorated mortar between bricks and replacing it with fresh mortar. If the mortar joints on your chimney or brick walls look cracked, crumbling, or recessed, tuckpointing is likely needed to prevent water from getting in.

How long do masonry repairs last?

Quality masonry repair done with the right materials will last decades. We use materials suited to New England weather — freeze-thaw cycles, heavy moisture, and cold winters are all factored into how we work.

Home Improvements

What kind of home improvement work does Mr. Home do?

Beyond waterproofing and masonry, we handle basement finishing, bathroom restoration, tub-to-shower conversions, flooring installation and repair (laminate, hardwood, tile), sheet rock repair, and general home repair and restoration.

Can you handle bathroom tub-to-shower conversions?

Yes. Tub-to-shower conversions are one of our most requested home improvement jobs. We handle the full scope from removal through finish work.

Do you do flooring installation and repair?

Yes. We install and repair laminate, hardwood, and tile flooring. We will assess the subfloor condition first and let you know of any issues before installation begins.

Can Mr. Home handle multiple projects at once?

Yes. Many customers combine jobs — waterproofing and basement finishing, or masonry repair and a bathroom renovation. Bundling work is often more efficient and cost-effective.

Yes. We serve Hampden, Hampshire, and Franklin County in Massachusetts, and Northern Connecticut including the Windsor Locks area. Call our MA line at (413) 222-5368 or our CT line at (860) 627-5610.
